School Board Approves FY26 Final Budget and FY27 Preliminary Budget
The board reviewed and approved the final fiscal year 2026 budget and the preliminary fiscal year 2027 budget. The final FY26 budget shows projected revenues of $59,863,710 and expenditures of $59,140,225, leading to a projected fund balance of 12.23%. The preliminary FY27 budget projects revenues of just over $60 million and expenditures of $60,127,000, with an anticipated fund balance of 12.31%. Key discussions included changes in compensatory and English learner aid, the status of the long-term facility maintenance fund, and the intention to spend down the food service fund balance.
Board Votes Against Placing Assistant Student Services Director on Unrequested Leave
The school board voted on a resolution to place one assistant student services director on unrequested leave of absence. This position was part of a departmental restructuring. Despite the potential for 80% reimbursement of salary costs and the need to meet maintenance of effort requirements for special education expenditures, the motion to approve the leave failed with a vote of 4-2. Concerns were raised about the impact on special education support, the compliance year, parent complaints, and the process of implementing such cuts. Board members also discussed the administrative overhead percentage and the timing of such a decision in June.
Paraeducator Master Agreement for 2025-2027 Approved
The board approved the 2025-2027 Paraeducator Master Agreement. This agreement includes revisions to language items and an increase to salary for both year one and year two of the contract. The motion to accept the agreement was made and seconded, and with no discussion, it passed unanimously with a vote of 7-0.
Board Debates, Votes on Activities Director Hire Amidst Experience Concerns
The board considered a motion to offer the Activities Director position to Matthew Jeffrey. While some board members expressed concerns about his experience level relative to the demands of managing over 60 activities, including athletics, music, and one-act plays, and the potential for a stressful workload, others highlighted his lifelong involvement in athletics and organizational aspects. The motion to hire was ultimately voted on via roll call vote. A discussion ensued regarding the possibility of a failed search if the motion did not pass, the need for immediate onboarding, and potential contract adjustments for an early start. The candidate, Max Jeffrey, has a pre-planned family vacation, potentially delaying his start beyond July 1st.
