Exterior Renovations and Color Scheme Approved for North Boulevard Residence
The Board of Architectural Review (BAR) approved the requested changes for BAR 2619 at 1309 North Boulevard, which include a new color scheme, renovations to the gables, and a new front door. The exterior will be painted Sherwin Williams Dried Time (body brick/siding) and Alabaster (soffit, fascia, windows, gables, trim), with Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black shutters. The gables will be restored with 7-inch lap siding using Hardy board, and this siding will also be used on the left side of the building where exterior-grade plywood currently exists. The front door will be replaced with a nine-light stained wood door (walnut color) matching the original sidelights, which will be painted white. Staff recommended approval, and the board unanimously approved the changes.
Board Approves Renovations and Bailey Bill Certification for Taxi Building
The Board of Architectural Review (BAR) reviewed and approved the proposed renovations and signage for the taxi building, located at the corner of Calhoun and North Main. The board also considered a preliminary certification for a special tax assessment under the Bailey Bill, which offers tax relief for rehabilitated properties. The project involves painting the building, adding signage to the Calhoun side, updating the exterior cooler and screen, and modifying pavement with faux turf areas and planters. The board approved the renovations and signage. The Bailey Bill certification was also approved, initiating a seven-year property tax freeze in exchange for investment in the property. The applicant anticipates spending $600,000 on the project, which is less than the $2 million threshold for extended relief.
Monument Sign Approved for Perks Car Wash via Comprehensive Sign Plan
The Board of Architectural Review (BAR) approved a comprehensive sign plan for a new monument sign for Perks Car Wash at the corner of North McDuffy and East Greenville. Although monument signs are not typically allowed in the Central Business District, this application was approved as an alternative under a clause for comprehensive sign plan approval. The existing sign is grandfathered in. The proposed sign is made of fake stone, is 2 inches deep, and will not have lighting, though solar uplighting was mentioned as a possibility and later confirmed. The address numbers (611) are also part of the sign. Staff recommended approval as submitted, and the board unanimously approved the plan.
New Projecting Sign Approved for ST Quality Electric
The Board of Architectural Review (BAR) approved an application for a new projecting sign for ST Quality Electric at 118 East Earl Street. The sign complies with Article 12 of the official zoning ordinance and the design guide for downtown. The sign will not be lit, though the applicant noted the possibility of adding floodlights in the future. Staff recommended approval as submitted, and the board unanimously approved the application.
