Parks and Recreation Department Updates on Summer Programs and Events
The Parks and Recreation Department provided an update on various ongoing programs and upcoming events. This included successful 'Kids to Park Day', the start of summer sports camps and a summer camp program, youth basketball league, and adult golf league. Staff training for part-time employees was also highlighted. The pool is open with swim lessons, with current sessions being fully booked and plans to open more spots. High pool attendance was noted, with daily counts often exceeding 200 swimmers, nearing the capacity of 400. The department is also promoting youth advisory council interviews available on YouTube, an upcoming 'America Waves' library program at Complex Park, and free monthly pickleball lessons. Preparations for the Fourth of July celebration were detailed, including a volleyball tournament, free swim, and the main event at Superstition Shadows Park with fireworks, live music by 'Over the Line', games, and food trucks. Information on the next regular meeting date was also confirmed.
Parks and Recreation Commission Recommends Fee Schedule Updates
The Parks and Recreation Commission reviewed and recommended proposed changes to the Apache Junction City Code, Volume 1, Chapter 4, Article 4-1, concerning Parks and Recreation Fees. The proposed changes include increasing fees for facility rentals, sports fields, ramadas, open spaces, personnel, alcohol permits, and the rodeo arena. New fees are also proposed for amenities at the rodeo event center, such as pavilions, dry camping, RV hookups, and portable stalls. Specifically, a 10% increase is recommended for MGC memberships, while day passes, aquatics fees, and recreation program fees are to remain unchanged. The commission also finalized vendor electrical fees for the rodeo grounds, setting them at $125 for the east side (50 amp outlets) and $150 for the south side (20 amp outlets). These changes are mandated by the state to be reviewed every five years and are anticipated to be in place by January 1, 2027, after city council approval, a 60-day public posting period, and a public hearing. The commission voted to recommend these changes to the city council.
