Handicap Parking Space Approved on Bunson Avenue
The council approved a motion to approve the handicap parking space on Bunson Avenue at 500 South 19th Street. This decision came after a motion and second, with no discussion, and was passed by a majority vote.
New Walking Tour 'The Day Lincoln Came to Town' Launched to Commemorate Abraham Lincoln's Visit
Keith Owens introduced a new program called "The Day Lincoln Came to Town, October 18th, 1856" walking tour, which commemorates Abraham Lincoln's visit to Belleville in 1856. The tour is a collaborative effort with local historical societies and aims to bring tourism to the city. A proclamation was adopted to designate October 18th as "The Day Lincoln Came to Town Day". Additionally, a website for discovering Belleville history and a school curriculum are being developed to highlight this historical event. The Lincoln Presidential Library and Illinois State Archives will also feature the tour on their websites, extending the Lincoln Trail to Belleville.
Freedom Fest and History Field Day Events Approved with Location/Time Changes and Street Closure
The council approved requests for Freedom Fest 2026 and Charlie's Placeville History Field Day. Freedom Fest 2026 will move its concerts to the campus soccer field with updated Friday and Saturday times. Charlie's Placeville History Field Day requested a rest area and street closure on Muda Avenue from East Washington to East Lincoln. Residents will have access during the event, and the city will provide barricades, signage, tables, and trash services. Both events were approved by motion and second with no discussion.
Council Approves Reading of Ordinances Related to Property Sale and Traffic Code Amendments
The City Council approved reading Ordinance 9501 and 9502 by title only. Ordinance 9501 authorizes the sale of a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan from the library. Ordinance 9502 amends Article 7, Chapter 76 of the revised ordinances concerning traffic and parking schedules. Both ordinances were approved following a motion, second, and roll call vote.
City Council Approves Multiple Infrastructure Projects and Service Agreements
The city council reviewed several motions related to infrastructure improvements and services. These included bids for East Monroe Aman and East Adams Improvements, downtown West Main resurfacing, and intersection improvement projects. Engineering and inspection services were approved for various street and infrastructure projects. Additionally, funding was approved for a shared use bike path and on-demand engineering/surveying services. A service agreement for stormwater education was also passed. The items were approved via roll call vote.
