Parks Commission Clarifies Minutes and Park Naming Policy

During the discussion of minutes for April and March, Commissioner Myers noted a potential discrepancy regarding the renaming of Stonehaven Park to John Ellum Park, stating that the commission's established policy is not to name parks after individuals and that this was not the motion made. Elaine from staff clarified that the text appearing as a title was pulled from a template and that staff is aware the bolded text represents the actual motion and direction. She acknowledged that titles and recommendations will be reviewed more carefully in the future. Additionally, Commissioner Myers requested that 'parking lot' be explicitly added to the revisions for the Stone Bridge Park project in the April minutes, as it was not clearly mentioned. Erin confirmed that the request would be noted, clarifying that less concrete would be used for walkways, and asphalt would increase for the parking lot. The commission approved the minutes with these noted corrections.

Parks Commission Rejects Council's Playground Replacement List Prioritization; Ad Hoc Committee Formed for Walnut Park

The Parks and Recreation Commission discussed the updated Fiscal Year 2026-2027 playground replacement list. Initially, the commission had approved a list including Lake Park and Caboose Park. However, City Council directed staff to prioritize Walnut Park and Oak Meadow Park, both larger parks, for this fiscal year, shifting Lake Park and Caboose Park to a later date. Commissioner Myers expressed strong concerns that focusing on two large parks would reduce the quality of equipment compared to a mix of large and small parks and noted community members from Shadow Lakes were expecting their park to be redone. The commission ultimately decided not to accept the council-changed list as presented, effectively rejecting the prioritization of Walnut Park and Oak Meadow Park for this year. Subsequently, an ad hoc committee was formed for the Walnut Park replacement, with Commissioners Velasco and Guhari volunteering.

Parks Commission Addresses Missing Trees and Future Park Programming

During the informational reports, Commissioner Myers inquired about missing trees along Continente. Staff inspected the area from Walnut to Logano Court and identified 19 residents with missing trees. Seven of these were deemed unsuitable for replacement due to proximity to yield signs or utilities. Notices will be issued to two parcels to replace their trees. Commissioner Myers also raised a concern about three missing city-maintained trees located between Lorian Lane and Griffith, which were not part of the initial inspection. Staff will investigate why these trees were removed and not replaced [cite: 137-139, 141]. Separately, a request was made to add the health and fire hazard potential of redwood trees along Sand Creek Boulevard to a future agenda, with staff suggesting a presentation on the city's redwood preservation program instead [cite: 448-461]. Additionally, a request was made for staff to research the feasibility and funding of specialized recreation programming [cite: 465-466].
