Brookline Educators Union Proposes Changes to Work Year, Evaluation Differentials, Summer Work Pool, and Stipends; School Committee Responds to Multiple Proposals

The Brookline Educators Union (BEU) presented several proposals to the school committee and superintendent. One proposal, concerning Article 4 and conditions of professional service, suggested increasing the ELL coordinator's work year from 210 to 215 days to support English learners. Another proposal aimed to modernize and update the evaluation load differential structure, introducing a point system (2 points for pre-professional status educators, 1 point for professional status educators) and a differential of $250 for each point exceeding 10, to better reflect the time and responsibility involved in evaluations. A third proposal sought to increase the pool of additional days for Unit B members for summer work from 30 days to no fewer than two work days per Unit B administrator contract year, with a guarantee of at least one pool day per member upon request. The final proposal recommended an annual stipend of $10,000 for the K-12 Wellness Education Curriculum Coordinator and the K-12 Performing Arts Curriculum Coordinator, recognizing additional district-wide responsibilities requiring significant evening and weekend work, with a provision to discontinue the stipend if a full-time Unit A teacher leader is assigned to support the same programmatic area. The school committee provided responses and counter-proposals on various union-submitted items, including paid parental leave, health and safety committees, heat protocols, and bereavement leave.
