Cairo Approves Phase Nine Street Resurfacing Plan, Including Several Additional Roadways
The City Council reviewed and approved the Phase Nine street resurfacing plan, which covers approximately 8.9 miles of city streets as part of ongoing roadway maintenance. The plan involves pricing by street to align with budget constraints. Several additional streets were proposed and added to the plan, including areas like Southwest Lakewood Drive, Southeast Horseshoe Bend, and sections of 1st Street Southeast, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th Streets from the high school to the hospital, as well as 7th Avenue Southwest. The council also noted that this is the first citywide street paving in three years.
Cairo City Council Tables Decision on ICE 287G MOA Amidst Community Debate
The City Council discussed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) concerning the ICE 287G task force model. This model allows specially trained officers to assist with limited immigration-related functions under ICE supervision, including verifying immigration status, processing, custody transfers, issuing detainers, and assisting with authorized arrests. Chief Santos believes approving the MOA will benefit citizens by improving communication with federal authorities and providing answers to families regarding detained individuals. The council debated the implications, potential funding, and community sentiment, ultimately tabling the decision for further discussion.
City Approves GIS Maintenance Agreement with Southwest Georgia Regional Commission
The City Council considered and approved a GIS maintenance agreement with the Southwest Georgia Regional Commission for a 12-month term at a cost of $10,000. This agreement ensures ongoing maintenance and updates to the city's mapping data, including utilities, zoning, addresses, hydrants, and other infrastructure layers. The Mayor was authorized to execute the agreement.
Park Vandalism and Infrastructure Issues Highlighted by Council Members
Council members reported on park issues, including damaged benches and a broken fan at Davis Park, and vandalism concerns. Councilman Burden highlighted damage to benches and expressed concern over vandalism, suggesting cameras in parks to protect taxpayer-funded amenities. Councilman Curly reported a covered dead-end sign and water runoff issues on 10th Street Southeast, and ongoing issues with chickens roaming the neighborhood off South Broad Street. He also raised concerns about dead trees on right-of-ways, with limbs falling into yards, and requested permission to address these trees.
City Attorney Contract Renewed Following Executive Session
The City Council entered executive session to discuss potential lawsuits, settlements, claims, and employee matters including hiring, appointment, compensation, discipline, or dismissal. Following the session, the council voted to renew the city attorney's contract for 13 months, from June 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027, at a rate of $4,000 per month plus litigation fees.
