Resident Criticizes Council's Vote Against 'Sea Fog' Resolution, Renews Call for ICE to Leave
Sidarth Meditro expressed disappointment that the council voted against the 'Sea Fog' resolution, which he believes could have mitigated the need for CERT and fire department resources. He reiterated his year-long request for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Agency to leave Camarillo, citing the abduction, torture, and deportation of over 2,000 people, including mothers and children, under unknown circumstances. Meditro concluded by stating 'ice out now.'
Camarillo Approves Assessments for Landscape Maintenance Districts
The council discussed the annual resolution for levying and collecting assessments in the city's landscape maintenance districts (zones 1-10). These assessments fund the maintenance of landscaping and related improvements, such as public landscaping, open space, and storm water basins, which provide special benefits to properties within each zone. The engineer's report recommends an increase in assessments for zone 9 for fiscal year 26-27. The report noted that zone 1 is a tax district, not funded by assessments. An attempt in June 2022 to increase assessments for zone 3 failed due to resident opposition, resulting in the general fund subsidizing that zone. The recommendation is to adopt the resolution for levying assessments in zones 1-10.
Older Americans Month Proclamation Presented to Council on Aging
The council presented a proclamation for Older Americans Month, recognizing the contributions of older adults to the community. Josie Zabarski and Sandra Melton from the Camarillo Council on Aging accepted the proclamation. The theme for the month, 'Champion Your Health,' was highlighted, encouraging seniors to stay active, informed, connected, and engaged. The Camarillo Council on Aging was acknowledged for its role in keeping seniors informed about services and resources and for being a strong voice for older adults. Council members thanked the Council on Aging for their work and commitment to the older adult community.
Teen Club Proposes Youth Events Featuring Local Bands
Maria Lisondo, also from the Teen Civic Engagement Club, proposed organizing teen events in Camarillo. Inspired by her positive experience at the VG's Tribute in Constitution Park, she felt a sense of community. Lisondo suggested inviting local teenage bands to perform at events specifically for Camarillo youth. She believes this would provide a safe gathering space, encourage creativity, and build a stronger foundation and bond between the local government and the youth.
Camarillo Down Payment Assistance Program Helps 16 First-Time Homebuyers
Mike provided an update on the Camarillo Workforce Housing Down Payment Assistance Program (DAP). The program, established following state legislation (SP2) and funded through the Permanent Local Housing Allocation (PLHA) program, offers $50,000 down payment assistance loans to qualified first-time homebuyers. Loans are for 15 years at 3% simple interest, with income limits set at 150% of the Area Median Income ($196,950 for a family of four). The city received over $782,000 in PLHA funds, enabling 16 loans. The program functions as a revolving loan fund. Nine loans were used for affordable units, including new townhomes and Habitat for Humanity developments. Eleven loans were issued to households working or living in Camarillo. The 2800 Berry Street project, partly funded by DAP, won an award for excellence from the Central Coast APA.
