City Council Issues Proclamations for Service, Heritage, and Awareness Months
The City Council recognized multiple individuals and groups through proclamations. These included Don Prosser for 50 years of service to the Carbondale Public Library Board of Trustees, and proclamations for Gun Violence Prevention Month, National Gun Violence Awareness Day, Jewish American Heritage Month, and National Preservation Month. Mayor Carolyn Harvey presented these recognitions, thanking residents for their contributions and encouraging community participation in these observances. The council also heard comments from residents regarding various community events and initiatives.
City Council Enters Executive Session for Property Pricing and Meeting Minutes Review
The City Council moved to enter into executive session to discuss the setting of a price for the sale or lease of city-owned property and to conduct the semi-annual review of executive meeting minutes. This action is permitted under the Illinois Open Meetings Act. Following the executive session, the council is expected to approve the minutes, determine the continued need for confidentiality, and authorize the destruction of audio recordings for meetings older than 18 months.
City Council Approves Annexation of Green Earth Properties
The City Council adopted two ordinances to annex Green Earth property located at Piles Fork Creek and Chautauqua Bottoms into the city limits. This annexation aligns with the city's 2030 vision plan to strategically close gaps in the city limits. During public comments, a resident inquired about a specific lot in Renfro Place that would be surrounded by the city after this annexation and suggested the city consider annexing other long-standing peripheral properties. Another resident praised the Green Earth organization for its work.
