Sports Tax Credits Application Approved; U'Lynchin Sculpture Purchase Sent Back to Committee
The Parks, Recreation, Arts Committee recommended authorizing staff to apply for amateur sports tax credits in partnership with Perfect Game. These credits, estimated at $80,000 annually, would apply to tournaments hosted at the athletic complex. The committee also initially recommended approving the U'Lynchin sculpture, funded by a budget transfer from the parks fund. However, after extensive discussion regarding the sculpture's connection to communist China, its cost, and alternatives like the 'Sculpture on the Move' program, the council voted to send the sculpture purchase back to committee for further consideration. Residents expressed concerns about the sculpture's representation and cost, preferring local artists or more cost-effective, diversified art acquisitions.
City Council Approves 2027 Meeting Schedule, Sign Replacements, and New Policies
The City Council approved the proposed 2027 city council meeting schedule. The Finance and Administration Committee recommended the schedule, which aims to avoid certain religious and national holidays. The council also approved the replacement of city hall sign faces, transferring $7,330 from the general fund reserve for the project. Additionally, a new policy for inclement weather and city hall closures was approved, aligning city closures with the Parkway school district's decisions. The council also revised the purchasing policy to incorporate a state-mandated qualifications-based procedure for procuring professional services. Finally, a revised travel reimbursement policy was approved, with updates to cover reimbursable expenses, local travel, and insurance requirements for rental cars. The committee recommended further exploration of a 5% transient guest tax, which would require special legislation and the formation of a commission to promote tourism and allocate funds.
Lot Consolidation Approved; Sale of Excess Reservoir Land Authorized; Old House at Hog Hollow Hours Under Review
The council heard a report on the Planning and Public Works Committee meeting regarding an amendment to modify the operating hours and patio use for 'The Old House at Hog Hollow'. This is an appeal, and the public is encouraged to provide feedback at the upcoming hearing. Additionally, the City Administrator presented a record plat for a lot consolidation, involving the consolidation of eight parcels totaling 13.61 acres zoned PI (Planned Industrial). Bill number 3589, approving this plat, passed its first and second readings. The council also heard the first reading of Bill number 3590, which authorizes the sale of 16.95 acres of excess storm water reservoir land south of Lowe's in Chesterfield Valley to Steinberg Advisors LLC.
