Region 5 South Soaring Contest Returns to Cordial for 55th Year

The 55th annual Region 5 South Soaring Contest is being held at the Cordial Crisp County Airport, with 42 planes and 44 pilots competing. The event has a long-standing relationship with the Cordial community, relying on support from the chamber and airport. The contest uses the airport's facilities, including closing a runway for safe operations. Contest Director Rich Owen and Contest Manager Chris Carter both highlighted the community's excellent support, the suitability of the area for soaring due to numerous small airports and flat fields, and the optimal flying conditions typically found, despite recent rain. New procedures for staging aircraft on the runway have been implemented for safety and efficiency. The competition involves different classes of gliders, including 15-meter, 18-meter, and sports class, with some pilots using water ballast. The event provides a platform for both experienced and young pilots, with some participants progressing to national and world competitions.
