Council Member Clarifies Controller Appointment Process, Citing Mayoral Authority and Grant Funding
Council Member Cileto responded to concerns raised by Legislator Bancowski regarding the Controller's appointment process. Cileto clarified that as a mayoral appointment, public advertisement is not strictly required. She confirmed that Tracy Smith Dangler's qualifications were reviewed, and her responsibilities are outlined in the resolution. She also explained that the salary and benefits are budget-dependent and that grant funding covers the initial period.
Main Street Portion Abandoned; City Restructures Financial Management Roles
The Common Council adopted Local Law Number 4 of 2026, which discontinues and abandons a portion of Main Street. This action is part of a broader initiative to modernize the city's financial management structure and appoint a Controller. Additionally, the council adopted Resolution 45-2026, reappointing the City Clerk Treasurer and Resolution 47-2026, appointing the City Fiscal Affairs Officer, following the adoption of Local Law Number 3 of 2026, which established these new roles and procedures.
New Trail Project at Point Gratch Seeks Volunteers
Council Member Cileto also promoted a new project by revitalized NARAK at Point Gratch in association with Kaboom, which received a grant to create a trail. Volunteers are sought for trail building, which will be located on the northwest/northeast side of Point Gratchet through a wooded area, featuring elements for climbing, research, and lectures.
Legislator Questions Transparency in Controller Appointment Process
County Legislator Bob Bancowski expressed concerns about the process for appointing Tracy Smith Dangler as Controller. He questioned why the position was not publicly advertised, why a job description with minimum qualifications and salary range was not available, and why the hiring process seemed rushed. He suggested tabling the resolution to allow for a more transparent process involving advertising, applications, and interviews.
Loud Speaker Permits Approved for Juneteenth and July Celebrations
The council approved loud speaker permit requests for the annual Juneteenth celebration on June 13th-14th, 2026, and for a July celebration on July 17th-18th, 2026, at 175 Fisel Avenue. Both requests were referred to appropriate departments for further processing.
