FHS Student Survey Highlights Sleep Deprivation and Mental Health Concerns
The Student Advisory Council (SAC) presented findings from a survey on student well-being and sleep at FHS. The survey of 796 students (38% participation) revealed that most students get 6-7 hours of sleep, below the recommended 8-10 hours. Key factors contributing to sleep deprivation include challenging coursework, 1-2 hours of homework daily, involvement in extracurriculars (sports, family responsibilities, jobs), early wake-up times (5-6 AM for most), and screen time before bed. A negative correlation was found between higher course levels and lower sleep duration. Mental health challenges are prevalent, with many students unaware of or not finding school resources helpful. Suggestions for improvement include later school start times, less homework, and more breaks.
FHS Academy Adjusts Start Time to 8:00 AM to Align with Transportation
The School Committee discussed and approved changes to the start and end times at the FHS Academy at the Thayer campus. The start time will move from 8:30 AM to 8:00 AM to align with the bus arrival time of 7:50-7:55 AM, allowing for an advisory block at the beginning of the day. This change will also result in students being dismissed 30 minutes earlier, providing more time for afternoon or early evening work. The decision was made to better utilize transportation resources and engage students at the start of the school day. The vote was unanimous (9-0-0).
School Committee Approves Educational Program for New Pre-K to 5 Early Education Center
The School Committee reviewed and approved the educational program for the new Pre-K to 5 Early Education Center project, which is subject to MSBA review. The educational program, developed through extensive community and district input, emphasizes guiding principles such as family and community partnerships, culturally inclusive curriculum, play-based learning, outdoor learning, student-centered learning, safety, and flexibility. The program outlines four potential models for the new school, including rebuilding or renovating the current Heminway School, a new Southside school at Bethany Road, or a combination of both. The Library Media Center and a Family Center are highlighted as key spaces in the new design. The approved educational program will be submitted to the MSBA as part of the Preliminary Design Plan (PDP).
