Gig Harbor Approves New Commercial Fishing Home Port Facility

The City of Gig Harbor presented a proposal for a new commercial fishing home port facility at the Ansuch Waterfront Park, located within Gig Harbor Bay along Harborview Drive. The proposal includes a new overwater moorage facility with 17 commercial berths, resulting in approximately 6,411 feet of overwater coverage. The project requires a shoreline substantial development permit and site plan review. Staff recommended approval, finding the project consistent with the city's shoreline master program and zoning regulations, including achieving no net loss of ecological functions through on-site, off-site, and compensatory mitigation. Federal and state permits have also been secured, with a biological opinion from NOAA indicating no jeopardy and that adverse impacts are offset by mitigation. The hearing examiner indicated that all requirements have been met and expressed support for the project.
