City Approves 'Dia de los Muertos' Event Proposal by Chamber of Commerce
The Harvard Chamber of Commerce and Industry proposed organizing a community-wide 'Dia de los Muertos' (Day of the Dead) event on Saturday, October 17th, 2026, from noon to 8:00 p.m. The event would involve closing down Air Street from Diggins to the train tracks, featuring two stages for music and children's activities, vendors, and local food. The Parks Foundation previously hosted the event but discontinued it due to mission misalignment and monetization difficulties. The chamber aims to educate the community about the cultural significance of the holiday. The council approved the street closure and use of city property, with the city providing security and public works support.
City to Seek Bids for Waste Hauling Services
The council approved staff to issue a request for proposals (RFP) for waste hauling services. The current contract with MDC is nearing renewal, and at least two other contractors have expressed interest in bidding for the service.
Strategic Vision Update Scheduled; Mural and Vacant Building Ordinances Considered
During the strategic vision review, a person connected to Cliff Dwellers was mentioned as a potential resource for guidance, with information passed to the mayor and Deb. A strategic vision update meeting is scheduled for June 16th. Additionally, the council was reminded of ongoing efforts regarding murals, with a potential ordinance needed due to business interest, and research into a vacant building ordinance to address properties that remain vacant and unproductive.
City Adopts Final Bike-Pedestrian Plan Amidst Speed Limit and Route Concerns
The city council adopted the final bike-pedestrian plan. This plan will be used going forward for grants, middles, and opportunities, such as establishing bike lanes on Jefferson or Lincoln. Concerns were raised about specific route realism on maps (e.g., going around a block on South Street) and the proposed 25 mph speed limit for bike routes, which is lower than the current city speed limit. Staff noted that the plan is subject to change and adoption is necessary for grant funding.
Students Honored for Outstanding Achievement as Featured Speakers
Mia Martin and Alver Huarez were recognized for outstanding achievement as featured student speakers at the Avid Summer Institute in 2026. The council presented them with certificates and acknowledged their hard work, leadership, and dedication, which bring pride to the community and serve as an inspiration.
