City Council Approves Two Fireworks Displays for 4th of July Celebration

The City Council approved a permit application for two public fireworks displays for the 4th of July 2026 celebration. One display will be a smaller event downtown at 9:00 PM, positioned in the parking lot at Santa Fe Plaza Drive and North Gray Street, immediately following downtown performers. The main citywide display will be at 9:30 PM at the Killeen Athletic Complex. Both displays are operated by Magic Display Pyrotechnics FX and have met all safety and regulatory requirements, with reviews from the Fire Chief and Fire Marshal. The downtown display is intended to enhance the festival experience for those downtown, as the larger display at the athletic complex has limited visibility from that area. Concerns were raised by Councilmember Brown regarding resource allocation and potential safety issues with two separate locations, but the Fire and Police Chiefs confirmed that existing staffing and security measures would be utilized without additional strain. The fireworks are sponsored and will not incur direct costs to the city's general fund. The council approved the permit 7-0.
