College of the Desert Highlights Landscaper Certification Program for Air Quality and Water Conservation
College of the Desert (COD) Partnership and Community Education Director Veronica Izarieta presented on the landscaper certification program, which is a partnership with the Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG) and the Coachella Valley Water District. The program aims to provide workforce training for landscapers, address dust emissions to improve air quality, and promote water conservation. The certification is required for new or renewing business licenses and is valid for one year. The training is free, approximately 60 minutes long, bilingual, and accessible online. PACE at the Palm Desert Mall assists landscapers who need help accessing the training. In 2025, 236 people completed the overseeding training and 268 completed the water conservation training. While La Quinta requires the certification, not all cities do, and COD is working to encourage more cities to adopt it.
Sunline Transit Agency Seeks Public Input on 'Rides Reimagined' Project to Redesign Valley Transit System
Sunline Transit Agency CEO Mona Babauda presented an update on the 'Sunline Rides Reimagined' project, an initiative to redesign the transit system. Phase one involved data gathering and public engagement. Phase two, currently underway, focuses on developing two service scenarios: one based on maximizing coverage across the valley and another based on ridership, focusing on higher-density areas. The agency is seeking public feedback on these scenarios through June 28th. The feedback will inform the Sunline Board of Directors in July, who will select a preferred scenario or develop a hybrid 'Plan C.' Further public engagement will occur in late 2026, with final plan adoption expected in early 2027. The project considers current resources, including a $50 million operating budget and a fleet of 50 buses. The ridership scenario proposes 15-minute service along Highway 111 and a new Route 7 serving downtown La Quinta but not extending into the Cove, which currently receives 45-minute service but would move to 60-minute service under this scenario. The coverage scenario maintains current service levels into the Cove but offers 60-minute service for Route 7, without the proposed 15-minute service on Highway 111. The agency noted increased ridership correlating with rising gas prices and discussed the operational cost-effectiveness of their hydrogen fleet.
La Quinta Honors Golf Journalist Larry Bohannon for 40 Years of Service and Contributions to the Community
The city recognized Larry Bohannon, a legendary golf journalist for the Coachella Valley, for his 40-year career covering golf for The Desert Sun. Bohannon began his career in 1982 and joined The Desert Sun in 1986, soon developing a weekly golf column. His reporting highlighted La Quinta and the Coachella Valley, contributing to the growth of the PGA tournament (formerly the Bob Hope Classic, now The American Express) by bringing a global spotlight to the area and attracting athletes and fans. The proclamation acknowledged his integrity, professionalism, and kindness, and noted his recent induction into the Coachella Valley Journalism Hall of Fame. Bohannon expressed plans to stay in the valley, spend time with family, travel, and possibly pursue freelance work.
La Quinta City Council Reviews Preliminary FY 2026-27 Budget with Focus on Capital Projects and Financial Stability
The La Quinta City Council reviewed the preliminary proposed budget for fiscal year 2026-27. The general fund budget totals approximately $92.8 million in revenues and $90.2 million in expenditures, projecting a surplus of $51,000. The budget includes a planned use of $2 million from Measure G reserves to accelerate capital improvement projects. Key revenue sources include sales tax (28.8%), transient occupancy tax (15.5%), and property tax (14.2%). Expenditures show a 3% increase over the previous year, with significant allocations to personnel, infrastructure, technology, and community services. Internal service funds show a decrease of $2.3 million. The council also noted the ongoing success of Measure G funding, which has supported public safety and capital improvements.
