Town Faces Challenges Addressing Hazardous Trees Amid Budget and Equipment Constraints

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to a discussion about the deteriorating condition of town trees and the need for a proactive approach to public safety related to trees. Residents and officials expressed concern over numerous trees in poor condition, some posing immediate risks of falling, referencing incidents where trees caused harm or damage. The discussion highlighted the financial and logistical challenges of tree removal and maintenance, including the limited budget, lack of equipment (like a bucket truck), and the issue of whether trees are on town or private property. While acknowledging the need for a plan, officials cited budget constraints and operational limitations as major hurdles. A motion was made to direct the administrator to meet with DPW and the tree warden to develop a strategic plan for tree management.

Board of Registrars Appointments Highlight Legal Hurdles and Outdated Laws

The board discussed the appointment process for the Board of Registrars, highlighting legal requirements for party representation and the challenges of town committees maintaining quorums. The Democratic Town Committee recommended Donna Bodis, while the Republican Town Committee's quorum issues prevented a recommendation. The board ultimately voted to appoint Donna Bodis as the Democratic nominee and decided not to appoint anyone to the Republican slot due to the committee's failure to meet legal requirements. Concerns were raised about the outdated and impractical nature of the current laws governing these appointments.
