Ken View Celebrates 70 Years; Transition to Kimberly Clark Expected to Boost Local Jobs and Production
Mayor and Jerry Mech visited Ken View to celebrate its 70th anniversary. Ken View employs approximately 550 people in the community and manufactures 98% of the world's supply of Listerine. The transition to Kimberly Clark is anticipated to expand production lines and create additional job opportunities. Jerry Mech noted Ken View's commitment to being a good employer and neighbor, involved in community projects. The Mayor also noted Cargill and Moravian Manor as large employers.
Cargill Litz Approved for Small Building Addition
Cargill Litz submitted a revised final land development plan for a small building addition and improvements. The addition is 240 sq ft and will house external piping and equipment, not an occupied space. New impervious area is just over 400 sq ft, offset by the removal of existing parking elsewhere on site. The project requires a waiver from the subdivision and land development ordinance regarding financial security due to the low cost of the project (just over $1,000), which would primarily cover temporary E&S controls. The project is located near the borough maintenance building, adjacent to an existing structure with external piping. The addition is enclosed, and no significant noise is anticipated. The project was approved with a waiver for financial security.
Infrastructure Updates: Runabout Line Project Nears Bidding, Rail Trail Funding Secured, Front Street Curbs to be Replaced
The runabout line project is ready for a pre-bid meeting, pending state grant consultant signoffs for reimbursement. The draft transportation improvement plan for the county is out for public comment until May 30th, with 70% of comments favoring the rail trail. The plan, which includes $900,000 for rail trail construction in 2029-2030, is expected to be approved by the Metropolitan Planning Organization in June. Additionally, contractors will begin working on curb replacement on Front Street from Cedar Street starting June 1st, with no anticipated road closures during this work. Water and sewer tours for June 9th and 11th are sold out. Residents inquired about the borough's water supply and the potential impact of AI data centers on water consumption, with the explanation that the supply is groundwater from seven wells and any large withdrawals require council approval and are governed by the Susquehanna Regional Basin Commission to prevent aquifer depletion.
Police Department Secures Federal Grant for Bulletproof Vest Replacement
The police department was approved for a federal grant to offset the cost of replacing bulletproof vests, which have a 5-year shelf life. This is the first time the department has received this grant in several years. The department has secured approximately $20,000 in revenue from various grant streams in the first few months of the year.
