Littleton to Host 250th Anniversary Town Picnic with Music, Games, and Historical Display

Littleton is celebrating the nation's 250th anniversary with a town picnic on July 4th, with a rain date of July 5th. The event will take place at FA Park on Foster Street from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM. It will feature a free concert by Molly Flannry and her quartet, playing patriotic music, jazz, and standards. The picnic is a 'bring your own' food event, and attendees are instructed to pack in and pack out their belongings. Parking will be available at the Castle in the Trees lot and the congregational church lot, with police assistance at the crosswalk. The event will include children's games such as sack races and potato-and-spoon races, reminiscent of the 1976 bicentennial celebration. Church bells from the congregational and Unitarian churches will ring at noon to commemorate the anniversary, a tradition from the 200th celebration. The Littleton Historical Society will host a separate event in the morning featuring a historic Revolutionary War-era cannon on display. The cannon was originally given to Groton as a commemoration and was recently rediscovered. While the cannon will be outside, displays will be inside the museum. The picnic is an alcohol-free event held on town property. Funding for the picnic comes from the Littleton Rotary and the Littleton Cultural Council. Volunteers are needed for setup and children's games. Attendees are welcome to dress in period costumes, but it is not required. Charlotte Russell will lead the singing of the national anthem, and there may be a reading of the Declaration of Independence by the historical society. Brief remarks are expected from representatives of the Rotary and potentially the select board.
