Long Beach Fire Department Continues Alpine Software Use with Council-Approved Payment
The council authorized payment for Alpine software for the fire department. This software has been used for over 20 years for various vital functions, including electronic recordkeeping, inventory, and dispatch. The cost for the past year's services increased to $24,693, now requiring council approval. Adequate funds are available in the department's contracted services budget. The cost has seen a minimal increase from previous years ($23,517 in 2024, $21,329 in 2023).
Long Beach Considers Dramatically Increasing Fines for Fireworks Violations
The council discussed an ordinance to amend the code of ordinances related to the prohibition of the sale or discharge of fireworks, firearms, and other explosives. The amendment aims to increase the maximum fine from $250 to $15,000. Council members expressed strong support for the ordinance, citing numerous public complaints about fireworks and the potential for serious injuries. Public comments also focused on enforcement and the dangers posed by fireworks.
Long Beach Streamlines Ocean Beach Park Fee Structure Process
The council held a public hearing to amend the code of ordinances regarding admittance fees and passes for Ocean Beach Park. The proposed ordinance aims to remove the fee schedule from the code and allow it to be set by council resolution, making the process more efficient. This procedural change is separate from the actual fee adjustment, which is addressed in a subsequent resolution. The purpose is to allow for quicker adjustments to fees without requiring a full public hearing each time.
Fire Department Acquires Life-Saving Lucas Compression Devices, Grant-Funded
The city manager was authorized to purchase two Lucas chest compression systems for the fire department's ambulances via a Savic buying group contract. These automated CPR devices are critical for cardiac arrest patients and allow first responders to focus on other interventions. The $51,855.16 cost will be fully covered by community development block grant funds. The systems have already proven effective in saving lives.
City Acquires Upgraded Firewalls, Fully Funded by Grant
The council approved a resolution to amend a prior resolution for the purchase of firewall units. An initial purchase was approved on March 18th, but the chosen firewalls were incompatible with the city's IT configuration. An updated quote of $39,560 from Gov Connect Inc. for compatible hardware and three years of security service was presented. This entire cost will be covered by a $50,000 grant previously awarded to the city.
