Body Art Apprentice Training Terminated
A notice of termination of a body art apprentice training was presented. Lyanna Chang has discontinued her apprenticeship under supervisor Julia Mora. This is an informational item, and no action is required by the board. It was noted that precedents for apprenticeships were established, even though this particular one did not work out.
Board of Health Addresses Missed Response Requirement Due to Weather
The Board of Health discussed the quarterly response performance, noting they missed the requirement for Q3. This was attributed to severe weather conditions (cold and snow) which led to eight responses being affected, preventing them from meeting the target. When weather-related responses are excluded, the performance meets the mark. Strategic deployment (SSM) involves placing ambulances at key locations for response times, which becomes challenging in extreme cold. Plans for the next year include modifying storm postings to involve hour rotations rather than full deployments to buildings, to manage crew comfort and equipment integrity, and to maintain response times during extreme weather, including both cold and heat.
Mosquito Control Spray Schedule and Virus Monitoring Announced
The Central Mass Mosquito Control Program's monthly spray schedule was provided for informational purposes. Residents can request their street to be sprayed or request an exemption. Mosquitoes are trapped and tested for viruses like West Nile later in the season, typically around late August to early September. Information about West Nile virus was recently shared via email.
Medication Takeback Day Announced
Information was shared about the upcoming 'Unwanted Medication Takeback Day' this Saturday at the senior center from 10 AM to 2 PM. Residents can drop off unwanted medications, sharps, and inhalers via a drive-thru. Police officers and members of the health department will be present to collect the items. This event serves as a way for residents to safely dispose of medications and other items.
Opioid Incident Report and Seasonal Overdose Trends Reviewed
The Board of Health reviewed the monthly opioid and quarterly report. April was an average month for opioid-related incidents. Historically, the next 100 days see a significant increase in overdoses, and the department will ensure Narcan is available on ambulances through the Leaphine program. The District Attorney expressed gratitude to Low General for their leadership since 2012, including Low Police, Low Fire, and Pridear Trinity. The report also touched on the upcoming season where historically 45-50% of city overdoses occur [cite: 93-110].
