Global Water Updates Maricopa Council on Growth, Infrastructure, and Water Resources
Global Water presented an update on their services and infrastructure within the city of Maricopa, highlighting growth, capital projects, rate reviews, water quality, and statewide water resources. The company reported an increase of approximately 1,000 service connections for both water and wastewater in the past year, bringing the total to about 60,000 connections. They emphasized Maricopa's conservation efforts, with per capita water usage at 105 gallons per day, significantly lower than the Phoenix and Pinal active management areas average of 182 gallons. Capital deployments in 2025 included upgrades to the Campus 1 wastewater facility with a new belt press and fine screens, and the commissioning of the Campus 2 water reclamation facility. Future plans for 2026 include master planning for additional capacity at the wastewater campus and advancing a recharge project designed to store up to 3 million gallons of recycled water daily. A rate review filed in March 2025 for both water and wastewater utilities is ongoing, with expected rate increases of $2.68 per month for the median water user. Global Water also confirmed that Maricopa's groundwater does not contain PFAS substances and updated the council on their Assured Water Supply designation, which they are seeking to increase. Conservation programs, including turf and smart irrigation controller rebates, are ongoing and grant-funded. A customer assistance program offering an annual benefit of $700 was also mentioned.
Maricopa Council Approves New General Plan 'Advancing Maricopa'
The city council reviewed and approved the draft of the new General Plan, titled 'Advancing Maricopa,' which has been in development for approximately 18 months. The plan aims to guide the city's growth and decisions over the next 10-20 years, aligning with Maricopa's vision and values. The process involved extensive public engagement, including surveys, meetings, and feedback periods, to incorporate resident desires for transportation solutions, employment, healthcare, housing, retail, and recreational amenities. The new plan moves away from the concept of Maricopa being solely a 'bedroom community' and focuses on creating a more dynamic community with diverse opportunities. The plan is organized into chapters covering various elements required by state statute and emphasizes cross-pollination between goals and topics. An executive summary and a digital, user-friendly version of the plan have been developed to assist residents in understanding its contents. The land use map within the plan is general, with zoning maps providing finer detail. An implementation work program is included to outline actionable steps for achieving the plan's goals. Following public and planning commission feedback, specific changes were incorporated into the plan, which was then presented for council approval.
