Village Approves 2026 Cheese Festival Permit, Reliance on Volunteers

The Board of Trustees approved a special event permit for the Village of Monroe Cheese Festival 2026, to be held on Saturday, September 12th, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The festival will feature vendors and music, with setup beginning at 7:00 a.m. Street closures in the downtown area, around Lake Street and Mill Pond Parkway, are expected. The event has received approvals from the building department, DPW, Police Department, Marshall and Sterling Insurance, Monroe Fire District, and Monroe Volunteer Ambulance Corps. A former non-profit organization, Action in Monroe, which previously organized similar events, is willing to support the festival but will rely on volunteers for execution. The event aims to bring people into the village and support local businesses.

Board to Hold Workshop with Historian for 250th Anniversary Programming

The board discussed authorizing a workshop meeting with historian Paul Ellis Graham on June 16th, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. to discuss historical programming and plans for America's 250th anniversary. The meeting aims to cover expectations, priorities, and initiatives for history-related programs, exhibits, and events, with a special focus on the 250th anniversary. Opportunities for community engagement and partnerships to enhance the appreciation of local and national history will also be explored. There was a brief discussion about potentially starting the workshop earlier, at 6:00 p.m., to allow for more time, but Trustee Piper suggested reaching out to the historian for a synopsis to potentially shorten the meeting. The motion to approve the workshop passed.

Seasonal Laborer Appointed for Weed Management at Mombasa Reservoir and Crane Park

The Board of Trustees approved the appointment of Alan Prince as a seasonal laborer to operate weed harvesters on Mombasa Reservoir and in Crane Park. The position is intended to assist with the extra extraction of weeds. Pre-approval for the appointment was received from the Orange County Department of Civil Service. Alan Prince's appointment is effective June 3rd, 2026, at a rate of $28 per hour, for approximately 13 weeks of work. The need for the full duration depends on the treatment of Mombasa Reservoir. He is expected to start in the first or second week of July. The board also discussed the rationale behind the seasonal role, noting that while water chestnut issues are largely under control, a new algae bloom requires treatment, which necessitates a later start for weed cutting.
