Carver High School Culinary Program Seeks $60,000 for International Chef Competition
Kisha Johnson presented a proposal for the 'Cook Around the World' chef competition, requesting $60,000 in funds for the culinary arts department at Carver High School. These funds will cover travel, lodging, transportation, and meals for 32 students, five chaperones, a nurse, and a driver. The students will compete internationally, attend a gala, and receive training from celebrity chefs. The department has a history of successful fundraising, marketing, community service, and dual enrollment programs, leading to job placements for students earning $15-$18 per hour. Previous events cited include Thanksgiving meal fundraisers, pre-Valentine's Day events, catering for various organizations, and assisting with large events like the Nick Sabin event where they served 3,000 guests. The competition will take place in Orlando, Florida, from April 22nd to 25th, with final payments due in February 2027 for the event and March 1st for bus transportation. The program has received positive feedback from vendors, faculty, community stakeholders, and alumni. In 2024, the program placed third out of 86 teams in a similar competition, with assistance from the city.
Retail and Alcohol License Applications Reviewed
Applications for lounge retail electric class package licenses were heard. Cloverland Stop and Shop at 3839 South Court Street will have a public hearing in the regular meeting. A transfer for retail beer and retail table wine off-premises only for TA Montgomery at 980 West South Boulevard was also noted, with the business to be present during the regular session. Balaha Corina at 461 Northeastern Boulevard applied for a similar license and will have their application carried over.
West Fairview Commercial Redevelopment Agreement Includes New Indemnification Clause and Food Desert Solution
An ordinance authorizing a development agreement and related documents for the use and grant of public funds and value in aid of the West Fairview Commercial Redevelopment was presented. A substitute document with a small adjustment to the paperwork, specifically an indemnification clause to protect the city from developer-caused accidents or workman's comp issues, was noted. This addendum was not in the original agreement. The developer is also proposing to address the site's difficult development conditions, including existing slabs from a former linen company that closed in the 1990s, at a cost of nearly a million dollars for removal. The site has a history of nuisance abatements, increased police calls, garbage, and crime, and is located in a food desert area. The agreement includes provisions for fresh produce, workforce creation opportunities, and leverages a $10 million streetscape project. The development aims to improve walkability and connect to the business district and neighbors. A quick-serve restaurant is anticipated, with Pizza Hut already approved, along with a chicken program inside a convenience store. The final development plan requires approval from the PIP team, ensuring all comments are addressed.
Appointments and Reappointments to City Boards and Commissions
The council reviewed several resolutions for reappointments and appointments to various city boards and commissions. Khalia Bell was reappointed to the Architectural Review Board. Diane Burke was reappointed to the Board of Adjustment. Sabrina Vong Griggs and Demetrius Puit were reappointed to the Montgomery Clean City Commission. Mataya Williams was appointed to the Parks and Recreation Board.
Alabama River Foundation Seeks $14,500 for Riverfront Rendezvous Event Promoting Environmental Education
Steuart Lackey, Executive Director of the Alabama River Foundation, requested $14,500 in funding for their two-day event at Riverfront Park. The event, the 2026 Alabama Riverfront Rendezvous, will be held July 7th-8th and is free for children from community centers, youth organizations, and local families. Last year, 350 children and parents attended, and this year, 600 are anticipated. The event aims to educate children about the Alabama River through activities like fishing, wildlife study, and water safety. New this year are a floating classroom, hands-on animal and wildlife experiences with ADM, safety and teamwork activities with Aaliyah, environmental education, demonstrations from Montgomery Fire and Rescue, and fish printing with the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. The Alabama Cooperative Extension Service with Auburn University is a new partner. The Montgomery Lions Club supports the event with $2,000. Lieutenant Willie E. Stewart of the Police Athletic League (PAL) of Montgomery also spoke, noting their partnership in conducting the fishing portion of the event for approximately 400 kids last year, with plans to serve 600 this year. The Alabama Department of Environmental Management is also a partner, focusing on educating children about waterway pollution. The foundation seeks funding to keep the event free and accessible.
