HLPC Approves Texas Spanish Patriots Plaque Placement Near CVB Building
The Historic Landmarks Preservation Commission (HLPC) considered a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) for a metal plaque honoring the Texas Spanish Patriots of the American Revolution at 200 East Main Street (landscaped area around the CVB building). The applicant, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT), requested a blue plaque with gold lettering on a freestanding pole, to be placed in a landscaped area. The commission discussed the placement, maintenance, and historical significance of the plaque. Concerns were raised about the city manager's final say on placement, the potential for too many signs in the area, and the long-term permanence of such markers. Despite some reservations about the chosen location being a 'prime spot,' the commission ultimately voted to approve the COA for the plaque's placement in the specified landscaped area, facing El Camino Real. The vote was four to two. [cite: 423-728, 731-742, 751-755, 777-841, 843-914]
HLPC Approves Exterior Lighting and Paint Color for 110 North Church Street
The Historic Landmarks Preservation Commission (HLPC) discussed and considered a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) for the property at 110 North Church Street. The applicant, Scott Henderson, requested approval for two exterior light fixtures and the painting of the building's front facade and rear in Sherwin Williams Holiday Turquoise. The commission approved the replacement of front doors, wood siding, plate glass windows, and painting of the front and rear during a previous meeting on May 14th. For this item, the HLPC debated the paint color, with some members feeling it did not align with the downtown character, while others acknowledged that solid paint colors on previously painted surfaces typically fall under ordinary maintenance and do not require HLPC review unless they are murals or involve painting unpainted brick. Ultimately, the commission voted to approve the COA, including the paint color, despite reservations from some members about its suitability for the downtown area. The approval was unanimous.
