School Handbook Updates Expected Following New Legislation
The school district's handbook is on the agenda for review. However, it is anticipated that revisions will be necessary within the next month or two due to new legislation that has been enacted but may not yet be signed by the governor. These updates will ensure the handbook aligns with current laws.
District Launches 'Walk It Out 2026' Wellness Program
The community is invited to participate in a 'Walk It Out 2026' wellness activity throughout June and July. Meetings are scheduled every Wednesday morning at 7:30 AM and after work from 3:30 PM to 4:00 PM for walks around the central office. Participants will track their steps, and a competition is underway. T-shirts are available for purchase. The event aims to promote health and well-being among staff.
Personnel Report Shows High Retirements and Resignations, District Analyzing Retention Strategies
The personnel report for the past month shows a large number of retirees and resignations, which is in line with historical data and not considered alarming. This trend is attributed to several factors, including the loss of grants leading to position reductions (particularly affecting master teachers funded by strong money), a reduction in force due to plant closures and decreased student population, and an aging workforce. Specifically, nine retirees are noted, with many from school food service where approximately 20 cafeteria staff are at retirement age. The teaching population also shows a pattern of early-career professionals and those nearing retirement, suggesting more retirements in the coming years. A concerning trend is the departure of 15 out of 31 employees who received relocation stipends two years ago, indicating that stipends alone do not guarantee retention. Exit interviews reveal reasons for leaving include long commutes (exacerbated by high gas prices) and increased workloads, such as teachers at LP Von teaching multiple subjects instead of one. The district is exploring retention strategies and analyzing exit interview data to inform future decisions.
School District Reapplies for Federal Grant
The school district is reapplying for a grant that previously ran out in October. This grant is now managed by the Department of Labor, having moved from the Department of Education under the current federal administration. Documentation was submitted, with the remainder expected by the end of the week and the following week. A decision on whether the grant is received is expected in September. All indications suggest a strong possibility of receiving the grant again.
Transportation Department Reports on Staffing, Fleet Upgrades, and Safety
For May, there was one new hire in staffing and workforce, with no driver departures. Three drivers are currently in training, and a major advertising campaign is underway to recruit more. The department successfully completed the 2025 school year and is planning for the fall. The fleet is being upgraded with 13 new buses planned for this year, aimed at strengthening the fleet and improving oversight. In April (correction: May), there was one accident, not at fault for the district. Safety focus and internal compliance are ongoing. Camera systems remain unchanged. Feedback on title tales on buses shows no changes. The new buses will be newer models, though specific model years are not yet available. The department is preparing for fleet upgrades and operational demands.
