Township to Explore Single-Use Plastic Reduction Ordinance Amidst Mixed Community Feedback
The Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC) recommended investigating a single-use plastic reduction ordinance. Two members presented research on the environmental and health impacts of plastics, citing issues like microplastic contamination, endocrine disruption, and the long degradation time of plastics. They highlighted neighboring townships with plastic bag bans or reduction policies and noted the availability of biodegradable alternatives. Concerns were raised by residents and board members about the economic impact on businesses and low-income individuals, the practicality of bans, potential unintended consequences (like increased reliance on other single-use items), and the timing of such an ordinance amidst economic difficulties. The board expressed openness to exploring the issue further, gathering more information, and dialoguing with local businesses.
Township Finances on Track; Park Project Funding Adjusted
The Finance Director presented the April 2026 financial report, noting that the township is on track financially, with general fund expenditures at 29% of the budget. Real estate tax collections are at 83%, with more expected in May. The report also introduced the concept of budget amendments, with a proposed amendment to reflect the $250,000 North Branch Playground and Pavilion project being funded from the Parks and Recreation fund balance instead of a grant, adjusting the year-end fund balance from $873,000 to $623,000. The project is expected to come in under the original $468,000 estimate. Bank account balances are at $17.2 million.
Township to Draft New Noise Ordinance Focusing on Construction Hours
The board considered a motion to have the township solicitor prepare and advertise an ordinance to amend the township noise ordinance. The current ordinance requires a decibel meter to establish a violation, and the amendment aims to remove this requirement and replace it with more common language. Public comment raised questions about the purpose of removing the decibel reading, specifically in relation to construction noise. The proposed change focuses on hours of operation for construction activity, setting limits for weekdays and weekends and a stop time at dusk, as a more practical enforcement method than decibel readings. The board ultimately amended the motion to have the solicitor prepare the ordinance for review before advertising.
