Council Debates Direct Public Communication Channel
The council discussed improving communication with residents by potentially establishing a dedicated channel for council-led communication, separate from general city announcements. Council Chair Rosenberg expressed willingness to draft summaries of resident questions and council responses, advocating for direct access to the city's Constant Contact system to share this information without an intermediary. This would allow for more direct and timely communication from the council to the public.
Economic Development Initiatives Highlighted, Council Seeks Metrics
During a presentation on economic and workforce development, the Director of Economic and Workforce Development, Lois Brown, discussed various initiatives, including business meetups, new business acquisitions, and an annexation plan. Council members inquired about metrics, particularly the number of residents placed in jobs and the impact of job losses, to which Brown responded with data on new businesses and their employment numbers. The discussion also touched on the potential for pop-up businesses in vacant spaces and the development of an online directory for local businesses.
City Council Approves Three-Month Continuing Resolution Amid Budget and Compensation Study Delays
The City Council discussed and proposed adopting a three-month continuing resolution for the budget due to delays in receiving information from the BRC compensation study and the need to address fines and fees. This allows expenditures to continue at the previous fiscal year's rate until a new budget is adopted. The resolution will cover standard expenditures, including mandated COLA and step increases for CBA employees, as well as uniform allowances, effective July 1, 2026.
BRC Compensation Study Update: Status Meeting Scheduled, Salary Data Delayed
The council received an update on the BRC compensation study. A status meeting was scheduled for June 8th at 11:00 AM, which council members could attend virtually but not participate in to avoid violating Open Meeting Act (OMA) rules. While initial conclusions on salary ranges were expected, the BRC is not yet prepared to provide them. The council plans to re-evaluate positions based on the study's results, considering past practices from 2017 where positions were adjusted to be competitive.
City Addresses Immigration Concerns' Impact on Local Businesses
Councilmember Brianna raised concerns about the impact of immigration enforcement fears on immigrant-driven businesses, noting a significant drop in in-person dining at establishments like La Familiar Pupuseria, with a corresponding increase in reliance on delivery services. She suggested proactive city support, potentially through signage or direct communication, to foster a safe environment and help these businesses thrive. The Mayor and other officials confirmed that such outreach and support efforts are already underway, often discreetly, with visits to businesses and legal counsel consultations regarding potential issues.
