Richard Wiles Promoted to Sergeant in Newcastle Police Department
The council approved Resolution 60, promoting Richard Wiles to the rank of Sergeant with the Newcastle Police Department. Councilmember DeFarlos Ward noted that Richard Rowell had been promoted to sergeant earlier that afternoon.
City Council Reviews Demolition Bids Totaling Over $300,000
The city council reviewed bids for demolition services. Four bids were received: Proquality Demolition for $165,100, Carbone Industrial Services LLC for a revised bid of $38,000 (originally $39,000), Sequel Excavating for $71,000, and River Valley Excavating LLC for $65,500. The council authorized the city board to open bids for city demolition.
City Approves Contracts for 2026 Paper Contract and 80-Cap Curve Grants
The council approved Resolution 074, authorizing the city charter under contract with Youngblock Maybe Incorporated for a total of $731,594.80 for the 2026 paper contract. Additionally, Resolution 075 was approved, authorizing individuals designated by the city charter and contract for putting the money building builders incorporated for an amount of $125,190 for 80-cap curve grants.
Resident Raises Urgent Concerns Over Unsafe Crowdon Avenue Sidewalks and Retaining Wall
A resident expressed concerns about the deteriorating condition of sidewalks on Crowdon Avenue, specifically highlighting a section of a retaining wall that has been failing for at least three years. The resident noted that wooden slabs are being used as temporary support and that a complete failure of the wall could lead to significant pedestrian injuries or cause traffic obstructions. The resident also pointed out that disabled individuals have to navigate off the sidewalk to get around the barrier, which is unsafe. Another section of the sidewalk at the beginning of the hill is described as crumbled and missing.
City Council Introduces Amendments to Police and Firefighter Pension Plans
The council introduced and tabled two ordinances: Council Bill 2026-07, amending Article 169 (Police Pension Plan), and Council Bill 2026-08, amending Article 171 (Fireman's Pension Plan). Mr. Ritter introduced the Police Pension Plan bill, and Mr. Ward introduced the Fireman's Pension Plan bill, automatically tabling them.
