The city secured $450,000 for odor control at the pepper plex, with engineering already paid for. $1 million in cash is available for roads, with an additional $4 million allocated for the next year, and $5 million for the year after, with engineering already complete. An additional $1.3 million is planned for smaller road projects. Drainage projects are also progressing, with $1 million cash and ongoing engineering work. The Sugarcane Festival building project has $3.1 million from the state, matched by $1 million, with sprinkler and AC systems prioritized. A new $5 million project is planned for the following year, focusing on expanding facilities to avoid needing to travel to Cade. A $1 million project for a frontage road, delayed for years, is also moving forward, with property acquisition potentially starting. Sidewalk replacement downtown, funded years ago, is now in the design phase and will be bid next year. Highland area drainage project should start soon, and another drainage project (Plantation) will be bid in three weeks. Additional drainage funds are expected from the parish.

City Pursues Multiple Grants for Infrastructure Improvements

The City Council authorized the submission of grant applications for various fiscal year projects. Resolution 2660 pertains to EPA community grants for pump stations. Resolution 2661 and 2662 are for SLCGP grants, with discussion focusing on cybersecurity and potential infrastructure for faster internet. Resolution 2663 and 2664 are for flood mitigation assistance grants, emphasizing drainage improvements. Resolution 2665 is for the Community Infrastructure Fund (CIF) project, focusing on sewer repairs. The council expressed a general willingness to pursue grant funding to address needs, noting that many grants require matching funds, which the city can often provide from departmental budgets. The sewer grant is a high priority due to the inability to raise sewer user fees sufficiently to secure state funding.
