City Recognizes Employees for Years of Service and Dedication
City employees were recognized for reaching work milestones. Justin Weaver received recognition for 20 years of service in the Police Department, highlighting his promotions and certifications. Sergeant Padisha Gaskets was honored for her contributions, including being the first Black female investigator and her community outreach efforts. Marguerite Palmer was recognized for 10 years of service in Parks and Recreation, noted for growing the senior adult program, developing an arts program, and spearheading the renovation of the Newberry Arts Center. Kim Hunter was recognized for 20 years in the Finance Department for her customer service. Firefighter Michael Parker was recognized for 10 years of service, highlighting his role as an instructor and his promotions to engineer, lieutenant, and captain. Firefighter Tim Fodor was recognized for his service since joining in 2019, with promotions to engineer and senior engineer. Chuck Wesser was recognized for 5 years in building maintenance. William Hathaway and Nate Lauermill were recognized for 5 years in the Utilities Department, for their work in right-of-ways and fiber network maintenance, respectively. Tiffany Robertson and Tyrone Dennis were also acknowledged for their service and promotion.
Newberry Fire Department Recognized for Fire Safety Efforts; Announces Community Initiatives
The City of Newberry Fire Department received a FireSafe South Carolina designation for community risk reduction activities for the seventh consecutive year. This designation is based on public education, smoke alarm installations, training, and partnerships with stakeholders. The department emphasizes fire prevention to reduce risks to firefighters and community members. They also announced upcoming initiatives including a 'Kids Fun Day' on September 21st, a safety seat checkpoint on September 24th, and a smoke alarm blitz in target areas. They will also be implementing child safety seat installation training for eight firefighters in November.
City Council Approves Grant Funding for Backstreet Historic District Recognition

City Council Approves Budget Calendar and 2026 Meeting Schedule
The council approved the 2026-2027 budget calendar and the 2026 regular city council meeting and work session schedule. The budget calendar maintains a similar structure to previous years, with first readings typically on the second Tuesday of the month and final readings the following week. The meeting schedule also retains the second Tuesday of each month at 7 PM for regular meetings, with additional work sessions for the budget.
