Residents Urge Opaikica Council to Restrict Data Center Development Amidst Environmental and Economic Concerns
Community members Sue Ellen Tixson, Tessa Talixson, and Dustin Howard voiced strong concerns regarding the potential development of data centers in Opaikica. They urged the council to place a moratorium or restrictions on data center development, citing risks associated with high costs, low local returns, adverse effects on quality of life, water scarcity, pollution, and declining property values for nearby residents. They pointed to negative experiences in other cities and highlighted that Georgia does not require data centers to report water usage. Howard provided a detailed list of measures taken by other municipalities, including prohibitions, pauses, conditional use permits, zoning amendments, and regulations on noise, energy, and emissions. They emphasized the need for transparency and citizen involvement in any potential approval process.
