Curriculum Committee Recommends Technology Contracts, Summer Programs, and Grant Application
The Curriculum Committee met on May 20th. They reviewed Jessica Moore's doctoral project on professional learning for language comprehension instruction. Recommendations included approving educational contracts for technology platforms and databases, disposing of obsolete instructional materials (142 books from Maurice Hawk Media Center), and approving summer 2026 community education programs (Red Cross certifications, swimming lessons). They also recommended approval for field trips and professional development, including two teachers attending APSI AP language and composition courses and one attending APSI AP literature and composition, both virtually at Ruckers University. Furthermore, the committee recommended submitting a grant application to the New Jersey Department of Education for optimal comprehensive universal screeners for K-3 students, seeking $17,032 to enhance multi-tiered systems of support.
Finance Committee Approves Numerous Contracts, Insurance, and Facility Project Bids; Notes Legislative Procurement Changes
The Finance Committee reviewed financial reports, with administration certifying sufficient funds and no line items overexpended. They reviewed several motions for approval, including professional service rates for 2026-2027, insurance carriers, a three-year agreement for the energy services company, a five-year agreement for custodial management services, and a five-year cornerstone fellowship church parking lot rental. Renewals for Rutgers University behavioral health care contract, software licenses, and transfers related to capital projects were also reviewed. The committee recommended approvals for the local tax levy request, use of cooperative purchasing services, disposal of obsolete equipment, and transportation renewals. Discussions also covered the EIP 2 energy savings improvement plan and HVAC projects for High School South, currently in the design phase, and other facility projects including auditorium renovation, tennis court renovation, and electrical work in robotics and culinary arts labs. A recent legislative change impacting the procurement of time and materials renovation work was noted. Cafeteria services saw increased meal counts year-over-year, particularly for students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Transportation routes were renewed with minimal to moderate increases, consistent with state CPI adjustments.
Parent Highlights Challenges in Establishing Student Club at High School South
A parent, Paul Song, addressed the board regarding his son's persistent efforts to establish a Habitat for Humanity student club at High School South. Despite fulfilling requirements, including securing a volunteer advisor and funding from the organization, the student encountered obstacles related to staff advisor availability, budgetary concerns, and activity scheduling. The assistant superintendent for pupil services and planning acknowledged the concerns and committed to facilitating a discussion between the student, Mr. Cington (the designated administrator for student clubs), and herself to clarify the processes and reasons behind the decisions made.

The Administration and Facilities committee reviewed several items, including a first-time policy review for P5112 (entrance age) and its alignment with strategic priorities and regulations. They also received an overview of high school and middle school athletics, noting successes in championships and individual honors. Additionally, job descriptions for Facilities Coordinator and TRS for Counseling were reviewed and recommended for approval. The next meeting is scheduled for June 2nd.
