Monday, Jun 1, 2026
Community Event Success and Rural Community Challenges Highlighted
During public comment, a resident expressed disappointment regarding the city's handling of a previous program, wishing a 'dream' could have been made possible. Another resident reported on the success of the 'Bronco Kicks on 66' event, highlighting its positive economic impact on Pontiac by drawing visitors from out of state who spent money locally. The resident also emphasized the challenges rural communities face with limited resources and the high expectations of residents.
Centennial Plaza Concrete Addition and City Hall Portico Approved
The council approved the concrete addition to Centennial Plaza and the design and material costs for a new city hall portico. Both projects are considered part of the TIFF 1 initiative. Separately, a side agreement for a trial period of a 'detective sergeant' rank within the police department was approved to incentivize investigative roles.
Reclex Park Playground Upgrade Approved, Sheds to Be Sold
The council reviewed and approved a proposal for the Reclex Park playground, with adjustments made to accommodate younger children. The project will be funded through ARPA funds and is slated to begin after the baseball season ends. Additionally, the disposition of Block 59 sheds was discussed, with a preference for selling them via sealed bid. The city may retain one shed for cemetery use, with the remainder to be sold.
Concerns Raised Over Street Safety, Parking, and Ordinance Violations
Council members and residents discussed concerns about street safety due to narrow roads and on-street parking, particularly on South Street. Suggestions included restricting parking to one side, implementing alternate side parking, or installing warning signs and cones. The issue of businesses operating out of homes with large vehicles was also raised as a potential violation of ordinances.
