Waiver of Liquidated Damages Granted for Resigning Staff Member
The board granted a waiver of liquidated damages for a professional staff member, Charlene Herrera, who resigned. The request was for a waiver of $500 as per policy GCQC regarding resignation of professional staff members. Although the supporting documentation was received, it did not initially meet the criteria for the waiver. However, a motion was made and approved to grant the waiver, considering the context of consolidation within the district.
Intergovernmental Agreement Approved for 'Pathways to Teaching' Program
The board approved an intergovernmental agreement for the 'Pathways to Teaching' program between the Arizona Board of Regents (University of Arizona) and Sierra Vista Unified School District. This agreement, effective July 1st, 2026, allows the district to place eligible student interns from the University of Arizona's program into vacant teaching positions. This initiative is intended to provide a pipeline for new teachers within the district. The agreement has been reviewed and approved by the district's attorney.
Public Hearing Authorized for Proposed 2026-2027 Budget
The board authorized the administration to present the proposed budget for the 2026-2027 fiscal year at a public hearing and receive public comments. This action is a required step pursuant to ARS 15-905 before the budget can be formally passed. The proposed public hearing date is June 16th at 5:00 PM. Following the hearing, a special meeting in July will be necessary to adopt the budget, as the 10-day notice period between the hearing and adoption will extend beyond the next scheduled board meeting and potentially past the state-required deadline for budget approval.
Buena High School Enhances Graduation Requirements with New Courses and Elective Flexibility
The board approved updates to Buena High School's graduation requirements and added courses. The changes aim to ensure a high-quality, student-centered education by aligning with state allowances for elective credits. The update increases flexibility for students in choosing classes that align with future career or educational goals. Specifically, the number of elective credits allowed has been increased, and new courses, including AP Business and a third-year math course, have been added to enhance the college and career-centered curriculum.
School Boundary Realignments Proposed to Enhance Neighborhood School Access
The board discussed and considered proposals for neighborhood alignment projects, which aim to rezone small pockets of neighborhoods to better serve students by placing them closer to their assigned schools. These proposals involve reassigning students from their current schools to closer ones to minimize travel time and create more cohesive neighborhood school zones. The presentation included a review of the current zone map and detailed explanations of proposed changes for specific pockets, including the Town and Country pocket, Highway 92 pockets, a PDS pocket near Village Meadows, and a Carmichael pocket. The impact on student capacity at receiving schools was also addressed, along with proposed transportation adjustments and options for grandfathering current students. The board also discussed the process for notification and feedback from affected families, adhering to policy and regulatory requirements for boundary changes.
