Personnel Policy Handbook Update Expected for Upcoming Meeting
A request was made to Terry or Louie for an email update on the personnel committee to finalize plans before the new fiscal year. Terry Trujillo confirmed that legal counsel plans to deliver the personnel policy handbook by the next meeting for review.
Summerton Celebrates Growth, Development, and Infrastructure Investments
A council member attended the ribbon-cutting for Estar and noted the programs they are bringing to residents. They also attended the National Public Works Week celebration, which included awards. Another council member attended the senior center celebration and the public works week expo. Both council members noted the significant growth and new development in Summerton, attributing it to staff hard work and council's vision for infrastructure investment. They highlighted the recent approval of the downtown redevelopment project, which had been on hold for nine years, and acknowledged a million-dollar grant received for it. The council emphasized that such developments take time but are now showing the fruits of labor from the past decade.
Council Members Share Community Event Updates and Subdivision Progress
Council members shared their recent community engagements. One attended the senior center for Mother's Day festivities, thanking donors for gifts. Another attended the YPO meeting and the ribbon-cutting for the first eight homes in the 1898 subdivision, describing them as beautiful. There was also a discussion about the McDonald's ribbon-cutting time, confirming it is tentatively scheduled for 10:00 a.m. The Chevron ribbon-cutting time is still pending confirmation.
Summerton Approves Zoning Ordinance Amendments for Shade Structures and HVAC Screening
The city council approved the second reading of Ordinance Number 2026-001, which amends sections of the 2025 Summerton subdivision and zoning ordinances. These amendments aim to comply with Arizona House Bill 2447 and update residential development standards. Specifically, the ordinance increases the maximum lot coverage for accessory shade structures and eliminates the requirement for rooftop HVAC screening. The ordinance passed its first reading on May 19th and will become effective on July 1st, 2026, if approved tonight.
Economic Development Staff Attend Retail Conference; Vaccine Clinic Announced
A council member mentioned attending the ICSC retail conference with economic development staff. A report is being compiled on businesses spoken to, including Walmart representatives and their local broker. Follow-up actions will continue to attract industry to Summerton. A reminder was given about a back-to-school vaccine clinic on June 11th from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the cultural center.
