City Council Urges Legislature to Consider Property Tax Reform Impacts
The City Council passed a resolution urging the Florida Legislature to carefully consider the impacts of property tax reform. Council members expressed significant concerns about potential revenue losses, particularly the impact on funding for essential services like police and fire departments. They highlighted that a substantial property tax reduction, such as a $100,000 exemption increase, could result in a $70 million hit to the city's budget, forcing difficult choices about service cuts or alternative revenue streams.
City Approves Development of Five 3D-Printed Affordable Homes
The City Council authorized the Mayor to execute an agreement with Bright Community Trust for the development of five single-family affordable homes using 3D printing technology. These homes will be built on two city-owned parcels acquired during the neighborhood stabilization program. The homes will be sold to 120% AMI buyers and will feature two bedrooms and one bathroom. Bright Community Trust will retain ownership of the land through a community land trust model to ensure perpetual affordability.
City Council Considers Framework for Resident-Only Parking Areas
The City Council held a public hearing for an ordinance amending city code to create neighborhood resident-only parking areas. The ordinance establishes the framework for considering resident-only parking districts, requiring separate council action for each specific area proposed. Approval of a specific area would necessitate a two-thirds vote of residents within that designated area and consultation with neighborhood associations. The ordinance aims to address neighborhood parking concerns while acknowledging potential impacts on businesses, particularly those outside of downtown.
St. Petersburg Designated as Bird Sanctuary Pending State Approval
The City Council designated the City of St. Petersburg as a bird sanctuary by amending city code chapter 4. This designation is pending approval from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) at their August meeting. Passing this ordinance by the city is a requirement to finalize their application to the FWC, which includes commitments to setting the area and placing appropriate signage.
