Sumter School District Proposes Recruitment and Retention Bonuses to Attract and Retain Staff

The Sumter School District presented a plan to offer recruitment bonuses to address staffing needs, particularly in Title 1 schools. These bonuses will range from $500 to $2,000, depending on school needs and available funding, with a cap of $10,000 per school. Bonuses will be disbursed one pay period after contract signing, and recipients must sign an agreement to remain employed for the entire school year, repaying the bonus if they leave before the contract period ends. The district also discussed new hire sign-on bonuses ($2,000 for certified staff, $1,000 for classified staff) and a multi-year commitment to retention bonuses to improve competitiveness and employee stability. Additionally, proposals include incentivizing professional growth for classified employees and encouraging educators to obtain certifications in high-need areas. A new initiative will implement the SC RISE Residency Program through Carolina Cap at R.E. Davis Preparatory Academy for the upcoming school year. The district is also exploring partnerships with Central Carolina and USC Sumter for dual enrollment teacher education courses and expanding internship programs to attract students from career and technology centers for various district positions, including bus drivers, food service workers, plumbers, and electricians.
