Board Discusses Online Financial Literacy Instructors and Curriculum Integration
The board discussed a resolution regarding the hiring of online instructors for personal financial literacy, with a concern that this course might be a disservice to students if not adequately taught or integrated. There was a question about whether this course is a requirement and if financial literacy concepts are introduced in earlier grades. It was confirmed that students choose this course and that topics like Roth IRAs, compound interest, good vs. bad debt, and budgeting are important and should be reinforced. The possibility of incorporating these topics earlier in the curriculum was discussed. The board also discussed the possibility of creating a shared drive for job descriptions, making them accessible to board members.
PTO Election Irregularities Alleged; Board States Lack of Oversight Authority
Two members of the Whitman PTO addressed the board regarding alleged election irregularities and violations of bylaws. Concerns included multiple voting sessions, the use of a makeshift ballot box, lack of debate, and the disqualification of candidates. They stated that the PTO is a taxpayer-funded entity and its actions reflect on the school system. The board attorney clarified that the PTO is an independent entity, and the board has no oversight authority over its bylaws or election processes, though it can withdraw recognition in extreme cases. The board cannot adjudicate PTO disputes.
School Board Approves HR Items, Notes Retirements and Discusses Financial Literacy Program
The board reviewed and approved human resources items, including retirements. Susan Clever, a secretary, retired after approximately 24 years, and Karen Moore, a specialized assistant at Burgess, retired after 26 years. Appreciation was expressed for their service. The board also discussed M14, the approval for online instructors for personal financial literacy, raising concerns about the quality and integration of this crucial subject matter.
Thomas Jefferson Elementary Showcases Literacy Initiatives and Reading Garden Project
Thomas Jefferson Elementary School students and teachers presented their "Growing Literacy, Inspiring Achievement" initiatives, showcasing cross-curricular work for NJSLA testing and the development of a reading garden. The fifth graders created an encouragement song and video to help memorize essay structures, demonstrating the impact of music and movement on learning. The reading garden, a collaborative community effort involving students, staff, families, and local businesses, serves as an outdoor learning space with a book trail and plans for further enhancements. The Green Club, Future Act Clubs, and STEM Club contributed to the garden's creation, including painting rocks, preparing grounds, building displays, and creating wind chimes. The Margaret Hagen Library donated a Little Free Library to the garden.
School Board Forms Special Committee to Address Superintendent Personnel Matters Amid Conflicts
The school board discussed the formation of a special committee to address personnel matters involving the superintendent due to existing conflicts among a majority of board members. This committee, comprising Vice President Terry Shear, Elaine Clancy, and Scott La Liberty, will work with the board's solicitor to identify and address these matters. Due to conflicts arising from ongoing litigation and familial relationships within the district, several board members are unable to participate in discussions regarding the superintendent's personnel matters. The committee will operate in an advisory capacity, and any actions requiring full board approval will be presented accordingly, adhering to guidance from the New Jersey School Ethics Commission. The board clarified its limited authority over independent parent-teacher organizations, stating it cannot adjudicate internal PTO disputes but can withdraw recognition in extreme circumstances.
