Vanderwal and Associates Updates Council on Downtown Waterlue Revitalization Efforts
Meredith Perks from Vanderwal and Associates provided an update on the downtown Waterlue revitalization efforts. The firm, which specializes in urban planning and economic development, has been working with the city for over eight years, focusing on downtown master plan development, urban design, and strategy implementation. Perks highlighted the city's history of visionary planning, dating back to the Millennium Plan in the late 90s and the subsequent downtown master plan, which have guided improvements and attracted private investment. Key goals for revitalization include bringing in new investment, addressing blighted properties, creating new destinations, and increasing the quality of life for residents and visitors. The firm's work involves evaluating existing conditions, developing visions and concepts, and strategizing for implementation, often in partnership with entities like the WDC. Recent successes and ongoing projects such as the Riverloop Expo Plaza, amphitheater, Art Block, Court Works, and East Village project were mentioned, emphasizing the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving revitalization goals. The firm also works on downtown-adjacent neighborhood projects, including work with Habitat for Humanity. The presentation aimed to inform new council members about the ongoing revitalization efforts and the role of the downtown master plan.
