Township Proposes Changes to Brush and Leaf Pickup Services to Optimize DPW Operations
The township is proposing changes to brush and leaf pickup services to better manage resources and meet demand. The Public Works Department (DPW) suggested the adjustments to improve their operational efficiency. Key changes include allowing residents to drop off brush and leaves at the Southfield Road facility year-round during operating hours, with landscape contractors needing homeowner accompaniment to prevent out-of-town material. The proposal involves adjusting the timing of collections throughout the year, with a significant reduction in brush pickup from 10 months to 5 months. Specific adjustments include not collecting brush during the peak leaf season (November, December, January) and in July and August, to allow DPW to focus on other critical tasks like snow removal, pothole repairs, street sweeping, and tree maintenance. The goal is not to eliminate services but to reallocate resources and adjust schedules. The council is being asked to discuss priorities, potential budget increases, enforcement of existing ordinances, and the possibility of new ordinances to support these changes. Public feedback will be solicited before a final decision is made, with potential implementation starting November 1st.
