Nauset School District Debt Assessments Corrected; Board Approves Partial Payment
The board discussed a discrepancy in Nauset Regional School District's debt assessments, identified by town liaisons Pete Dahl and Robert Tobias. It was found that the methodology for calculating capital obligations for Brewster and other member towns was inconsistent with the regional agreement, leading to Brewster overpaying by approximately $391,000 over the past three years (and $416,000 over six years), while other towns paid less. The fourth quarter payment for fiscal year 26, due in June, was held pending board direction. The board voted to approve making the fourth quarter payment minus the over-assessed amount for fiscal year 26 ($174,000) and to work with the district and other towns to resolve the discrepancies from previous years. Town council has advised that this approach is legally permissible. The district's excess and deficiency fund may be used to cover impacts.
