Flock Cameras Enhance Public Safety; Sheriff's Department Shares Success Stories
During the City Council meeting, Council members asked Sergeant Strong of the Fairfield County Sheriff's Department several questions regarding Flock cameras. Sergeant Strong confirmed that the cameras are a valuable tool for law enforcement and that their use has been discussed extensively, with the city now on its second contract and having added three cameras this year. Flock maintains all data related to camera usage, and this data is shared with agencies throughout central Ohio for mutual aid. Regarding the sale of data, Sergeant Strong stated he could not answer definitively but later, Law Director Thad Bogs confirmed that the city's subscription agreement with Flock prohibits them from selling customer data. Sergeant Strong shared success stories, including solving a string of burglaries by identifying a suspect's vehicle and apprehending a suspect involved in an armed robbery. The cameras also assist in locating missing persons. Councilmember Payne expressed appreciation for the Sheriff's Department and support for acquiring more cameras. Councilmember Deweiler invited the community to a public safety town hall on June 3rd featuring a panel of law enforcement and government officials to discuss public safety.
City Pool Sees Moderate Membership Sales; Day Passes to Be Introduced
Finance Director Amanda Jackson provided an update on the city's pool operations. The pool opened over Memorial Day weekend, but usage has been slow due to less than warm weather. To date, 329 memberships have been sold, compared to 411 sold in the entire previous year. Jackson is not concerned about the difference, as daily membership sales continue. Day passes will become available the following Monday, and the city plans to have staff on hand to assist residents with the verification process and ID acquisition. While acknowledging that some may find the new process inconvenient, Jackson noted that many residents have complimented the effort to enhance pool safety and reduce past issues. Signage, including sandwich boards and yard signs, is being developed to inform patrons about the ID requirement for entry.
City Council Approves CRA Agreement with Molto Canal Point2 LLC
The City Council reviewed and approved Resolution 26-026, which authorizes the city to enter into a Community Reinvestment Area (CRA) agreement with Molto Canal Point2 LLC and a related school compensation agreement with the Canal Winchester Local School District. This agreement provides a CRA exemption for new structures, includes school compensation, and a community benefit payment from the property owner. The payment is set at 25 cents per square foot at permit and 25% at occupancy for the benefit agreement, which will be allocated to the general fund unless a special revenue fund is established. The resolution was moved by Mr. Shay and seconded by Mr. Mclofflin, and passed unanimously.
Canal Winchester Chamber Reports Strong Progress and Financial Health
Elizabeth Wood, President and CEO of the Canal Winchester Chamber, presented an update on the chamber's activities and progress. Since October, the chamber has focused on building a stronger organizational foundation, including updating its mission statement. They have restructured the membership and marketing coordinator position and added a summer staff member, Hannah Lawson, to support member engagement. The chamber has increased community partnerships, including with Human Services for events like the 'Fishes and Loaves Food Alliance' and initiated new programs like 'Leadership Canal Winchester' and 'Canal Winchester Dining Week'. The nine-month leadership program, starting in September, is already sold out with 15 spots reserved, generating over $14,000. Financials show a significant increase in annual sponsorships ($17,000 in 2026 vs. $6,000 last year), Facebook interactions, and event attendance compared to the previous year. The chamber is in a strong financial position, with net revenue up over $52,000 as of April 30th, and hopes to return some of the 2026 funding if not all is needed. The chamber is also celebrating its 70th anniversary and invited council members to an open house.
