District Faces Budget Shortfall, Property Tax Increase Proposed for FY2026
The board discussed the financial status and budget realities, noting that the district is not in a unique position regarding financial challenges. The proposed final budget for fiscal year 2026 is $124.5 million, with $2 million drawn from reserves. Key cost drivers include special education, contractual obligations, cyber charter expenses, and transportation. Despite expense reductions and anticipated state revenue increases, a $2 million gap persists, necessitating a property tax increase. The proposed millage rate is 18.0986, and the earned income tax rate remains at 1.1%. The budget will be available for public comment before a final vote in June.
Health Insurance Costs Expected to Rise 17.5% for School District
The board discussed the significant increase in health insurance costs, anticipated to rise by approximately 17.5% for the coming school year. This increase is attributed to high claimant experience post-COVID, higher costs for pharmaceuticals, and increased use of drugs for diabetes and weight control among participants.
District Celebrates Student Successes in Academics, Arts, and Career Programs
The board celebrated student achievements in various programs, including Poetry Out Loud, National History Day, and career and technical education. A student was recognized for placing second in the state Poetry Out Loud finals and for her acceptance into the United World College in Armenia. Students were also honored for their success in National History Day, with three students placing in the top six at the state level, and one advancing to nationals. The district's career and technical education programs were highlighted, showcasing student work and pathways to post-secondary success. The board also acknowledged the accomplishments of teachers and staff through Teacher Appreciation Week and various award ceremonies.
Student Achievements in Poetry and History Day Celebrated
The board recognized a student for finishing second in the state finals of Poetry Out Loud and for being accepted into the United World College program in Armenia. The student received $500, and the school received $200 for poetry books. The district has had 11 state finalists in Poetry Out Loud over 21 years, more than any other school. The board also recognized students who excelled in National History Day, with Walter placing second in the junior research paper category, Nalaia Simmons placing fifth in performance, and Naomi Waybright placing sixth in the individual website category. Walter will advance to the national competition.
Modernized Anthropology and Sociology Curricula Approved
The board reviewed and approved curriculum revisions for Anthropology and Sociology, aiming to modernize the content and improve learning outcomes. The Anthropology curriculum now includes essential questions, learning goals, content, and vocabulary, with an emphasis on disciplinary skills and the study of human cultures. The Sociology curriculum has been streamlined from 16 to 10 units, also focusing on essential questions and learning goals, and can fulfill graduation requirements. A new textbook, 'A Brief Introduction,' was approved for the sociology course.
