City Proclaims June as National Cancer Survivor Month
The City Council approved a proclamation for National Cancer Survivor Month in June and National Cancer Survivors Day on Sunday, June 7th. The proclamation defines a cancer survivor as anyone living with a cancer history from diagnosis through the remainder of their life. It acknowledges the significant population of cancer survivors in Wachi and prioritizes their access to effective treatments and quality care. The city encourages citizens to celebrate life and honor caregivers.
Community Voices Strong Support for Pride Month Visibility and Inclusion
The City Council heard extensive public comment on the 'Pride Month' proclamation and related banner policies. Many residents spoke about the importance of visible support for the LGBTQ+ community, sharing personal experiences of discrimination and emphasizing that Pride banners serve as a vital symbol of belonging and safety. Concerns were also voiced about the 'Family Month' banners and their potentially exclusionary and disparaging message towards the LGBTQ+ community, contrasting with the city's stated values of diversity and inclusion. Some speakers advocated for the city to uphold its proclamations with concrete actions and policies.
City Approves Four-Year Interlocal Agreement for District Court Services
The City Council approved an interlocal agreement for district court services between Chelan County and the City of Wanche for the next four years. This agreement continues the city's contract with the Chelan County District Court for municipal court and probation services. The mayor collaborated with the district court judges to establish reasonable compensation, which includes slightly larger increases than usual to account for four years without prior increases. The rates will be effective starting in 2027 and will be incorporated into the city's budget.
City to Update Permit Specialist Job Description
The City Council authorized the mayor to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with ASME to update the job description for the Permit Specialist position. The current description is over 10 years old, and the revisions reflect current technologies and clarify how these tools impact daily responsibilities. This update is intended to modernize the role and ensure it meets professional standards and supports efficient city operations, without changing the position's classification or incurring fiscal impact.
City Accepts $50,000 Grant for Home of Peace Mausoleum Repairs
The City Council accepted a $50,000 grant from the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation for repairs to the Home of Peace Mausoleum located at 900 block of South Miller. These funds will address water damage from previous years. The grant does not require a local match, meaning no direct financial impact on the city budget beyond the initial spending by the facilities division. Work is planned to start this fall and continue into next spring, with all grant funds required to be spent by next June. The full extent of repairs may not be known until work commences.
